I interviewed young men who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and the findings demonstrate some of the ways they approach decision-making in their lives. As well as publishing the research in journal articles, we have created a comic to portray a fictionalised setting from which decisions emerge.
In this comic, Shared Decisions, a mother and son manage daily life and the decision-making that young people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy are involved in as they develop independence. This comic draws from Graphic medicine, which uses comics and graphic novels to explore health care from the perspective of patients and clinicians, using imagery to depict experiences of health and wellbeing that can be difficult to express. The comic is an adaptation of the film Shared Decisions.
