Shared Decisions

A mother endeavours to nurture her son’s agency as they navigate life with a muscle-wasting condition.

I conducted interviews with boys who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and the findings demonstrate some of the ways they approach decision-making and develop independence. As well as publishing the research in journal articles, we have used animation to portray a fictionalised setting within which decisions sometimes emerge.

In this film, Shared Decisions, we encounter a mother and son as they negotiate life, it explores how decision-making can be a part of developing independence in the lives of young people who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The film acts as a companion piece to In and on their Own Terms, providing further insights on the lives and experiences of disabled young people.

Animator Jeremy Richard provides a warm, graphic style, and musician Wez Allard sets the scene with his compassionate, original music score.
